Guided Whitetail & Black Bear Hunts near Pierceland, Saskatchewan

Whitetails, black bears and thirty-six years of the same family

Ask Saskatchewan hunters about trophy whitetails and the Martineau River name tends to come up. Martineau River Outfitters says it has been under the same family ownership, the Naults, since 1989, which it describes as one of the oldest family-run whitetail outfits in the province. Its home base is Pierceland, in the far northwest corner of Saskatchewan next to the Alberta border and not far from Cold Lake, and the hunting itself takes place across roughly 500,000 acres of northwestern Saskatchewan.

What is on offer

The outfitter focuses on two species, and lists both on the Saskatchewan Commission of Professional Outfitters registry for resident and non-resident hunters:

  • Whitetail deer – a late-season hunt in November, with the outfit managing for mature deer. The business says its largest whitetail taken by a guest was in the 220s.
  • Black bear – spring hunts and a fall season, guided with two hunters per guide.

Camps and comfort

The operation runs three lodge and camp locations, taking about six hunters per week in total, and each hunter has a private bedroom. Meals are home-cooked, and Tourism Saskatchewan notes showers and flush toilets, two outpost camps, and that the lodge is drive-in and pet friendly. The two remote camps have cell service and Starlink internet, so hunters can stay in touch. The main camp is about eight kilometres south and six east of Pierceland, and one outpost sits on the Martineau River roughly 60 kilometres north of town.

Beyond hunting

The registry also lists eco-tourism and outdoor activities, including shed hunting, photography, horseback riding and snowmobiling, so the area is not only for hunters.

Getting there

Most out-of-province guests fly into Edmonton and drive about four hours to Pierceland, which is how the business describes the trip. The outfitter can explain what to bring.
