What "mixed farming" means here

• Poultry – chickens, a sector that in Saskatchewan runs under supply-managed marketing boards
• Hogs – barn-based production, which requires careful biosecurity and often limits farm visits
• Beef – cattle raised on pasture and fed local forage and grain
• Vegetables – garden and field crops grown alongside the livestock
• Agricultural services – the practical work of running a large farm, from field operations to barn management

The Assiniboia area

Assiniboia is the main service centre for the Rural Municipality of Lake of Rivers and the surrounding grain and ranch country south of the Trans-Canada Highway, between Moose Jaw and the Montana border. The land is dry-belt prairie, with spring wheat, durum, lentils and canola in the fields and cattle on grass, and its climate, with hot summers, cold winters and low rainfall, shapes everything from seeding dates to barn ventilation.

Before you call or visit

• Livestock and poultry barns often restrict visitors to protect animal health, so phone ahead rather than dropping in
• Ask which products, if any, are available for direct sale, and in what quantities
• Mention the legal land description if you are asking about directions, since rural roads can be hard to find
