Guided Stone Sheep, Moose & Caribou Hunts in Yukon Concession #14 in Whitehorse, Yukon

One guide, one hunter, seven thousand square miles

That is the short version of how Trophy Stone Outfitting describes its Yukon operation: low-volume, highly personalized hunting, with a single guide assigned to each hunter. The outfit is family owned and run by Dean, Lori, Bill and Rosie Sandulak, who started outfitting in the Riding Mountains of Manitoba in 1988 and later ran several other outfits before settling in the Yukon, where they hold Concession #14. The company says it has more than thirty years of experience in Manitoba, the Yukon, Alaska, Australia and New Zealand, and it is licensed by the Yukon Department of Environment to guide big-game hunters.

The country

Concession #14 lies in central Yukon, about 140 air miles north of Whitehorse, and covers roughly 7,000 square miles (around 4.5 million acres) of mountains, long valleys and lakes. Camps are reached by horseback, boat or floatplane only. Hunters sleep in cabins, of which the outfitter has roughly twenty scattered across the area, or in wall tents and backpack tents when the hunt takes them into more remote ground. The company describes its camps as clean and comfortable.

Hunt by hunt

Stone sheep
A ten-day horseback hunt, concentrated from August 1 into early September, in country between roughly 4,500 and 7,000 feet. Rams in the area are mostly dark and are reported to average about 38 inches; as in all Yukon sheep hunting, only legal rams may be taken.
Yukon moose
A ten-day rut hunt using horseback, boat and Argo, depending on the area. The outfitter reports bulls averaging 58 to 63 inches in spread, with some larger.
Mountain caribou
A ten-day horseback hunt above treeline, at about 4,500 to 6,500 feet, where herds of fifty or more gather during the rut.
Grizzly, black bear, wolf and wolverine
Available in the fall season, with grizzly and black bear also hunted in spring and wolf in winter. Single-species or mixed-bag hunts can be arranged.

Before you book

Non-resident hunters in the Yukon must be guided and must buy their hunting licence online from the Yukon government; the outfitter supplies the seals, tags and a fishing licence. The hunting pages invite inquiries for pricing, and the outfitter can walk new clients through the physical demands of mountain hunting, travel logistics and the gear list.
